The Science of Light Healing

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy, clinically known as photobiomodulation (PBM), is a noninvasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared (NIR) light to penetrate the skin and stimulate healing at the cellular level. Unlike UV light, which can damage skin, red and near infrared wavelengths are biocompatible and have been studied in thousands of peer-reviewed studies.

The therapy works by energizing mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells, to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel that powers virtually every biological process in your body. The result is faster healing, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and enhanced cellular function across tissues throughout the body.

At Well Centered Wellness in Sanford, NC, we use full-body and targeted red light therapy panels calibrated to clinically validated wavelengths for maximum therapeutic effect.

The Mechanism

How Red Light Therapy Works

Red light therapy leverages two specific spectrums of light to trigger powerful biological responses inside your cells.

Red Light (630–700 nm)

Red wavelengths penetrate the skin's surface layers, targeting cells in the dermis and epidermis. This spectrum is particularly effective for skin repair and rejuvenation, collagen production, wound healing, and reducing surface level inflammation. Red light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, directly boosting ATP production.

Near Infrared Light (800 to 1,100 nm)

Near-infrared wavelengths penetrate deeper into the body, reaching muscles, joints, tendons, and even bone. This spectrum excels at reducing deep tissue inflammation, supporting muscle recovery, improving joint health, and stimulating cellular repair at depth. NIR light also positively influences the nervous system and has shown promise in neurological and cognitive applications.

Evidence Based: Photobiomodulation has over 5,000 published studies documenting its effects on wound healing, pain reduction, inflammation, cognition, and cellular energy. It is FDA-cleared for several indications and widely used in clinical, sports, and wellness settings globally.

What You Gain

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

From skin health to athletic performance to sleep quality, red light therapy delivers a wide spectrum of wellness benefits without drugs, needles, or downtime.

Cellular Energy Production

Red and NIR light stimulate mitochondria to produce more ATP, giving every cell in your body more fuel to function, repair, and regenerate. More cellular energy means more vitality.

Skin Health & Rejuvenation

Red light boosts collagen and elastin synthesis, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone, and accelerates healing of acne, scarring, and sun damage.

Inflammation & Pain Reduction

Light therapy down-regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulates oxidative stress, offering meaningful relief for joint pain, arthritis, tendinitis, and chronic inflammation.

Sleep Quality & Circadian Rhythm

Evening exposure to red (not blue) wavelengths supports melatonin production and helps reset the circadian rhythm, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep.

Muscle Recovery & Performance

Athletes use red light therapy before and after workouts to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness, speed recovery from micro-tears, and improve endurance and strength outcomes.

Cognitive & Mental Clarity

Transcranial near infrared light therapy has been shown to support mood, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and memory by enhancing blood flow and cellular energy in the brain.

1

Intake & Protocol Design

We discuss your health goals and identify the best exposure parameters, wavelength, duration, and target areas, for your needs.

2

Comfortable Positioning

You lie or stand comfortably near the red light panel. You may remove clothing over the target area for best results. Protective eyewear is provided.

3

Light Exposure (10–20 Minutes)

The session lasts 10 to 20 minutes. You'll feel gentle warmth, similar to sitting near a fireplace. No UV radiation, no burning, no pain.

4

Immediate Return to Activities

There is zero downtime. Most patients notice progressive improvement with consistent sessions, typically 3 to 5 times per week for 4 to 8 weeks.

Synergistic Care

Combining Red Light Therapy with Other Treatments

Red light therapy integrates beautifully with other services we offer, creating compounding benefits that exceed what any single therapy can achieve alone.

Red Light + Hyperbaric Oxygen

These two therapies share a common mechanism of boosting cellular energy and reducing inflammation through complementary pathways. Used together, they accelerate healing and are popular for post-injury recovery and longevity protocols. Learn more about hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Red Light + StemWave

StemWave activates stem cells and breaks up scar tissue while red light therapy promotes tissue repair and reduces inflammation, a powerful pairing for chronic pain, joint injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions.

Red Light + Peptide Therapy

Growth and healing peptides work systemically while red light promotes localized repair. Together they create a whole body regenerative effect that supports healing, body composition, and longevity. Explore our peptide therapy options.

Red Light + Psychiatric Care

Red light therapy is a powerful adjunct to psychiatric medication management, offering natural support for mood, sleep, and cognitive function that complements traditional mental health care.

Common Questions

Red Light Therapy FAQ

Is red light therapy the same as a tanning bed?
No. Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light, completely different from UV light used in tanning beds. It does not tan skin, does not cause sunburn, and carries none of the skin damage or cancer risks associated with UV exposure. Red and NIR wavelengths are biocompatible and therapeutic.
How soon will I see results?
Some people notice improved energy and skin glow after just a few sessions. Most therapeutic benefits including pain reduction, sleep improvement, and skin rejuvenation build progressively over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use. Cellular changes take time to accumulate, so frequency and consistency are key. We typically recommend 3 to 5 sessions per week for the first month.
Are there any side effects from red light therapy?
Red light therapy has an excellent safety profile with very few reported side effects. Occasionally, people experience mild, temporary fatigue after their first session as the body responds to increased cellular activity, this resolves quickly. Protective eyewear is recommended during sessions as a precaution. We screen all patients and will advise you if any conditions warrant caution.
How does red light therapy differ from infrared saunas?
Infrared saunas primarily generate heat and use broader spectrum infrared wavelengths. Red light therapy panels deliver precise, narrow band wavelengths at controlled doses directly to tissue without generating significant heat. The mechanisms are related but distinct. Red light therapy is more targeted, evidence-based for specific conditions, and does not require the intense heat exposure of a sauna.
